Herbal Medicine by Ellie Holly

What is herbal medicine?

  • Herbal medicine is the use of plant remedies in the treatment of ill health. It is the oldest system of medicine in the world.
  • Herbal medicine offers safe, effective treatment for a variety of health problems, both acute and chronic.
  • Herbal medicine treats the whole person - the underlying causes of ill health as well as the symptoms.
  • The modern herbalist is able to combine traditional knowledge with the latest scientific research for the benefit of patients.
  • Professional herbalists have detailed knowledge about the interactions between conventional drugs and herbs. Herbal treatment can work safely and effectively alongside conventional medicines.
  • By using whole plant extracts, the full range of the plant's potential medicinal and nutritional value is made available. As a result, many of the side effects associated with isolated chemical extracts or synthetic drugs can be avoided.

The Herbal Consultation
The first consultation lasts for one hour. A thorough medical history is taken to ensure treatment is holistic - the health of all aspects of the patients are considered and addressed.

Patients are asked about current ill health; their medical history; diet and lifestyle. Blood pressure is checked and if appropriate, a physical examination is carried out. If is helpful if you can bring details of drugs, dosage and how long you have been taking them.

At the end of the first consultation, herbal remedies may be prescribed for internal or external use. Medicines are tailored to treat both symptoms and causes. Dietary and other appropriate recommendations will be made. Subsequent visits usually last half an hour.
