Yoga, Pilates, Feldenkrais and Chi Kung at the Haelan Centre
Hatha Yoga is part of the ancient system of Yoga (meaning union), which
aims to bring the mind, body and spirit into balance. As such, it is the
ultimate holistic system for moving towards and maintaining health.
The Inner Yoga Trust was founded
by Jenny Beeken, who was originally a student of the highly venerated
BKS Iyengar one of the main teachers responsible for bringing yoga to
the West. Jenny’s work, and thus ours also, is greatly influenced
and inspired by teachers such as Vanda Scaravelli and Angela
Farmer. Jenny has authored several books and videos on Yoga.
Inner Yoga is characterised by the attention and focus on subtle movements
in the inner body. Students are encouraged to move according to their
own inner awareness and are guided by the teacher to find their own safe,
well-aligned expression of the Hatha yoga poses (asana). Straining to
achieve perfection in a pose is not encouraged; instead the teacher will
guide you to work deeply to release and relax held tensions and stuck
energy.
Many people find that practicing in the Inner Yoga style is a nurturing
and subtle way of working that helps you to reconnect with and listen
to your body. The practice leaves you feeling more relaxed and energised,
with a greater sense of peace. Once you establish a regular practice,
yoga can be a great support to help you deal with the stresses and strains
of city life. Students generally leave the class feeling lighter, calmer
and more grounded. This means General classes are suitable for everyone,
regardless of age or flexibility. You need to have completed at least
one year of regular practice to gain the maximum benefit from Intermediate
Level classes.
Classes may be attended as a course of six lessons or on a drop in basis.
Many of the benefits of Yoga come with regular practice. To encourage
this, we charge £6 per class if you book a course of six lessons
at the beginning of the course, and £8 per class if you attend on
a drop in basis. A concessionary rate of £5 is available for daytime
classes; ask the teacher if you are unable to afford the standard rate.
The classes are small (a maximum of 8 students) so that individual needs
may be more readily met, in a friendly environment. Please ring
the teacher to check availability before you attend for the first
time, & if you have not attended during the previous week.
Students who wish to deepen their practice or have particular needs may
consider one to one sessions. The teacher will develop a course of sessions
that are specific to your individual needs & will include instructions
on home practice. These sessions last one & a half hours & take
place at the student’s home (£30) or at the Haelan Centre
Studio (£40). Concessions are available for those in need.

Developed by Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-84), an eminent physicist who also
helped introduce Judo to Europe, The Feldenkrais Method is beginning to
find its place as one of the most effective methods in the field of movement
and body/mind or ‘somatic’ learning. Already well established
in Germany, Israel and the US, it has become best known in areas of the
dance, musIc and performing worlds in the UK. However, its extraordinary
possibilities are starting to be recognised far more widely now.
The method works by helping you become aware of what you actually do.
For example: If a friend sees you coming down the road, they will recognise
you from your walk before they can see your face: everyone’s walk
is unique – like their handwriting. Interlace your fingers. And
then try interlacing them the other way, with the other thumb on top.
How does it feel?
We all have our own way of doing things that feels familiar, that feels
‘right’: that we can say feels somehow ‘like me’
- even if we aren’t clear exactly what that is. Some of these patterns
and habits will serve us
well and some will not. Some will limit us in what we want to do and some
may eventually cause discomfort or even injury and pain.
Moshe Feldenkrais created thousands of clear, accessible movement classes
involving gentle movements, carefully crafted to help the participant
explore their own particular habits in movement and ‘posture’.
Based on sound neurological principles, the classes help the participant
become aware of their patterns and in the process open up new possibilities
so they can do what they want in life more easily, comfortably, efficiently,
gracefully – with less effort, pain and strain.
When you know what you do, you can do what you want’

Chi Kung is an ancient Chinese form of exercise that helps to promote
the body's flow of Chi (or vital energy). Chi Kung translates as 'energy
work'.
It includes:
1. Exercises for opening and mobilising the body and joints
2. Breathing techniques
3. Slow movement exercises
4. Walking forms
5. Static postures
6. Meditation
Chi Kung is easy to learn and the movements are simple, often inspired
by the forms of animals or nature. Each movement created has an intention
of moving Chi within our body. Chi Kung is linked to Acupuncture and Shiatsu
as it uses the same conceptual framework of the meridian system (channels)
through which energy flows. Chi Kung is also associated with Toaist and
Buddhist philosophies and practices.
With regular practice, Chi Kung has physical, mental and emotional benefits.
Some of the benefits of practicing Chi Kung regularly are:
1. Increased energy
2. Builds physcial strength and stamina
3. The achievement of inner stillness
4. Helps to support the body's systems such as the central nervous system,
digestive system and immune system
5. Groundedness
6. A sense of well-being and clarity
Chi Kung is open to all levels of fitness as you will determine the pace
of your class. It is best to wear loose clothing while practising Chi
Kung.
Courses are 8 weeks long (call to find out when the next course starts)
and run throughout the year. The cost is £56 (Concessions are £48).
Please ring Chris if you would like to
attend the course, or if you would like to drop in to try out a class.
Private Classes are also available.

If you are coming to a 6pm class it is best to arrive at five or ten minutes
before the class starts and come through the shop, although you can use
the Clinic Entrance, situated at the side of the shop in Crouch Hall Road.
For other classes lightly tap the buzzer marked studio (this is under
the bells for Clinics 1-3 - do not ring these or you will disturb Clinics
in session). The door will be buzzed open shortly afterwards. Follow the
stairs all the way up, turn left at the top and walk all the way along
to Room 4.
