Pre-birth Support with Acupuncture by Michelle Austin-Marriott

Acupuncture is a natural approach to help women prepare themselves to have the most efficient labour possible.

Research suggests that pre-birth acupuncture offers a range of positive effects in labour that goes beyond reducing the time spent in labour, with midwives reporting a reduced rate of medical intervention.
Feedback suggests that pre-birth acupuncture treatment is more than just a useful support to reassure concerned women. Midwives report that it consistently increases the chances of women experiencing a natural efficient labour and contributes to reduced intervention rates, including medical inductions and caesarean sections.

Midwives have also observed a trend in women who received pre-birth acupuncture treatment to either go into spontaneous labour around their due dates, or, if an induction was required, to respond well to acupuncture treatment for induction and progress efficiently to a natural birth.

Pre-birth treatments can also help to deal with presenting problems such as insomnia, heartburn, pregnancy induced hypertension or posterior positioned babies and emotional problems.

In preparation for birth, acupuncture treatment is usually recommended on a weekly basis from 36-37 weeks until labour.

Points are used according a woman's constitution and pregnancy history. These include points to ripen the cervix, to help position the baby in the best presentation for labour and to promote optimal energy and stamina for a woman to enter into labour.
