Creative Arts Therapy at the Haelan Centre
Creative Arts Therapy uses a variety
of art forms including drama, movement, creative play, art and music,
as tools of emotional expression. It can be beneficial for a wide range
of emotional and psychological difficulties in children and adults,
such as:
- low self-esteem
- shyness
- autistic spectrum
- mild learning difficulties,
- ‘special
needs', and associated social & emotional difficulties
- severe learning
disabilities
- anger issues
- behavioural problems
- depression
- anxiety
and stress those who have difficulty expressing themselves
verbally or speaking trauma-related issues
You do not necessarily need to be experiencing difficulties, in order
to benefit from the therapy. Sessions can also provide a safe and useful
setting for creative or personal exploration, developing emotional well-being
for both children and adults.
This type of therapeutic work can also be particularly helpful for those
wishing to deepen their understanding of themselves, or develop their
creative potential.
What happens during a session?
Each session lasts for
an agreed regular time, between 45 minutes (for children) and an hour,
depending on the clients' needs. Clients will usually be offered some
gentle creative ‘warm-up' activities in order
to ease them into the session. The therapy itself may involve using small
toys, stories, puppets, music or artwork for children. With adults this
may extend to include drama and movement. Towards the end of every session,
the therapist ensures that the client has returned their focus from whatever
emotional or creative journey has taken place, to attention on the here
and now, ready to return to the outside world.
It is important to note- you do not need to have any talent
or creative ability whatsoever to benefit from sessions! Just
bring yourself and a willingness to be present.
What are the benefits and how many sessions will I need?
This type of creative therapy is usually most beneficial as part of
an ongoing series of sessions. With children, or those with learning
difficulties, it is often useful to begin with 6-8 sessions and review
progress. Usually longer-term benefits will arise as a result of longer-term
sessions. Each individual client is assessed and reviewed separately,
in order to agree the optimal time-frame for both client and therapist.
Sessions take place weekly, at an agreed regular time and place.
